In what is a first for the BRICS, Brazilian candidate Roberto Azevedo won the race to become the new leader of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The Brazilian mission did not directly confirm the news, but said there would be a press conference arranged on Wednesday afternoon after the WTO formally announces the result.

Azevedo, meanwhile, retweeted a report saying that he “is selected as next head of WTO”.

“My candidacy had a very broad base of support from all kinds of countries,” Azevedo wrote in his website.

In an interview last week with Xinhua, Azevedo said one of his advantages is that he knows where the problems are for the Doha round negotiations.

“There is no way forward for the organization unless it’s discussing, examining and eventually negotiating the issues which are priorities for businesses and those priorities change over time,” he said.

He said that members have not really tried to break the deadlock of the Doha round since 2010.

“I think it’s time that we go back to the table,” he said.

Azevedo beat Mexico’s Herminio Blanco, widely seen as the favored choice of the United States.
