The FBI now says that the two Boston Bombing suspects are brothers – Dzokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, both legal permanent US residents, originally from an area near Chechnya in Russia. They lived in Kazakhstan before coming to study in the US.

One of the Boston bombing suspects, idenitifed as suspect 1, was killed during a shootout with police possibly due to explosions that may have been detontated on his body, the police say.

The remaining brother – suspect 2 – is on the run, the FBI says, and is dangerous. Boston police have asked residents of Watertown to remain indoors.

In the meantime, Boston transit has been ordered suspended.

Earlier on Friday, Boston police had launched a massive manhunt for suspects involved in a fatal shooting of an officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the suburb of Cambridge.

Police were able to chase the suspects into the Boston suburb of Watertown, where they carjacked a Mercedes Benz SUV.

Early news reports mistakenly indicated that a suspect had been taken into custody. The thinly built man was made to disrobe nude to ensure that he was not carrying any form of explosive device before he was driven off by police. He was later released after being identified as the owner of the SUV.
