At least 51 people were killed in a bus accident Saturday afternoon in Brazil, local media reported.

The driver of the ill-fated tourist bus, which was carrying more than 55 passengers, lost control of the vehicle during a turn, before it veered off the road and fell into a ravine in the southern Brazilian province of Santa Catarina, local RBS TV news portal reported.

Over a dozen ambulances have rushed to the site, but growing darkness is hindering the search and rescue operation, according to local media reports.

The bus was about 10 km (6 miles) from its destination in the city of Joinville when it crashed, a police spokesperson said, adding that no immediate cause for the crash had been determined.

Rescue crews were still trying to rescue survivors and recover the bodies of the victims late in the day.
