Forty-seven people have been killed and many seriously injured in a 6.6 magnitude earthquake in China’s western Gansu province on Monday, according to state media reports.

An emergency-response plan has been initiated by the China Earthquake Administration.

A 6.6 magnitude quake jolted the junction of the Minxian County and Zhangxian County at at 7:45 a.m. Beijing Time.

The epicentre, with a depth of 20 km, is 170 km away from the provincial capital Lanzhou, according to the administration.

A 5.6 magnitude quake jolted the same area later at 9:12 a.m.
